Congress must act now, lives are at stake.

Refugee children and families are suffering in detention camps across this country without adequate food, shelter or basic sanitation. Their human rights are being violated. Others are living in fear of the threat of mass-deportation and “round-ups,” pending in 10 cities across the country. The current administration is using migrant suffering as a weapon in a political game to push for their racist nationalist agenda.

On Saturday, via Twitter, Trump gave Congress a two-week deadline to “work out a solution to the Asylum and Loophole problems,” or he would not approve aid for facilities housing and processing migrants and would reinstate the Administration’s abhorrent plan to arrest thousands of people across the country.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez put the severity of this issue in context as a rallying cry that something must be done now, and we at Brand New Congress stand behind her words

“The United States is running concentration camps on our Southern border, and that is exactly what they are.

I want to talk to the people that are concerned enough with humanity to say that…’never again’ means something. The fact that concentration camps are now an institutionalized practice in the home of the free is extraordinarily disturbing.

It’s very difficult to say that, because it is very difficult to accept the fact that this is how bad things have gotten. But that IS how bad things have gotten.”

— Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, June 21, 2019

Human suffering is at the heart of this crisis. Our immigration system has been broken for decades, and is increasingly volatile. That’s why in November of 2017, Brand New Congress was the first national organization to call for the Abolition of ICE and the Abolition of CBP. Our candidates are fighting to create sweeping immigration reform that breaks down the barriers to citizenship and ends mass-deportation and mass-detention of migrants. No human being is “illegal.” Our country cannot let xenophobia and racism drive our policy.

In June of last year AOC stood at the border and called for humane treatment for all and the Abolition of ICE. It’s a year later and nothing has changed for the people caught in the middle of this nightmare. That’s why Congress needs to act NOW and in 2020 we must elect new representatives in the House and Senate. Representatives who will uphold the values of life, liberty and justice for ALL.

Contribute today to help us elect a Brand New Congress who will uphold the basic tenets of human dignity and fight for a just government.
